BSc in Multimedia Technologies

BSc Multimedia Technologies (Combined)

Multimedia is the seamless integration of text, sound, still and moving images, and control within a single digital environment that comprises hardware and software. It is widely used, for example, in education, marketing, and entertainment, and is revolutionising the way people use and interact with computers. The development of a good multimedia product demands understanding of design and of technology. Fitness for purpose is vital; so the design must ensure that the product looks, sounds, and performs in ways that are natural and fit the audience and situation. Of equal importance is the technology, which must deliver graphic excellence, speed, usability, interactivity and robustness consistent with purpose and budget. Web-based multimedia products require special attention because of the added complexity and low-bandwidth of communications.

The pervasiveness of computing throughout industry and society means that there is an increasingly large number of 'hybrid' occupations in which a study of computing, not just use of it, is beneficial. A student may wish, therefore, to undertake a study programme that combines computing with another subject. The Combined Subjects computing programmes are designed to offer maximum flexibility of combination with other subjects but at the same time to comprehensively and coherently cover an identified body of knowledge, together development of cognitive skills, and coverage of a broad range of key skills.

Thus, the Combined Subjects programme in Multimedia Technology has a smaller body of knowledge and fewer themes than the comparable single subject programme but it retains coherence and integrity and aims to produce graduates who are capable of creating multimedia products that combine good design with appropriate and reliable technology. They will be familiar with new trends, a variety of design techniques and software tools, and be able to implement products in a number of environments, including the web. They will be able to select appropriate criteria and evaluate products against them to meet client requirements.
