BSc in Internet Technologies (Combined Honours)
Use of the Internet, and more specifically the World Wide Web, has expanded at an enormous pace in recent years. This has had a profound effect on the computer industry and on the approach to the development and implementation of systems. There is strong demand for professionals who have the technical skills to develop web sites, and more importantly, understand the data, systems and networking infrastructures that lie behind the web site. These professionals will be familiar with mobile working and the integration of phone, web and office applications.
The pervasiveness of computing throughout industry and society means that there is an increasingly large number of contexts in which a study of another subject is beneficial in conjunction with Internet Technology. The combined honours Internet Technology programme covers the body of knowledge and technical skills essential to web development and at the same time develops relevant cognitive and key skills.
Thus, although the Combined Subjects programme in Internet Technologies has a smaller body of knowledge and fewer themes than the comparable single subject programme it retains coherence and integrity and aims to produce graduates who can use the latest techniques and tools to create, publish and maintain dynamic web sites that interact with the organisation's databases and systems. Graduates from this programme will understand the design issues and pressure for rapid development and change that arise from a competitive electronic business environment. They will be able to select and use software that monitors a site's usage, and evaluate its commercial effectiveness and technical efficiency, and address issues associated with security and privacy. They will continually update their knowledge by researching the latest trends and technologies.
