BSc in Information Systems Management (2008-9)
As technology races ahead, forward-thinking organisations are changing their culture and processes and to facilitate this they need computing professionals with problem solving skills and innovative ideas more than ever before.
The BSc in Information Systems Management produces graduates who recognise the social dimension of computing as well as its business and technology associations. The can appreciate the significance of web and mobile technology, analyse requirements and develop and support information systems.
Typical careers for graduates from this programme include Information Solutions Developer, Application Developer, User Support Information Services Manager, and Information Systems Manager - key roles in modern organisations.
The course is structured to progressively build your knowledge, understanding and skills over the three years of the programme. As well as learning about computing, web and mobile technologies, you will develop your personal skills - enabling you to work individually and as a member of a team, to critically assess situations, and to formulate creative solutions.
Another feature that will help your employment prospects is the Department's accreditation to deliver Vendor Qualification training.
Level 4
You will learn about the fundamental nature of systems and nature of management, develop skills in modelling and application development, utilising advanced features of office software. You will explore the features of the web and multimedia, and their application in ebusiness and virtual communities. Of equal importance to your technical skills are your ability to communicate, present information and argue a case - your future career will be heavily dependent on how well you appreciate human-to-human interaction as well as the interface between humans and computers.
Level 5
A series of core modules develop key management skills such as project planning and human resource management, and you acquire in-depth understanding of e-commerce and its role within the global business community. You undertake an six-week period of work placement with one of our company partners, addressing the challenge of putting project management and development techniques into practice.
Level 6
You will address advanced concepts relating to technical innovation, database design, and management of a computer-based environment. You are able to choose from a range of option modules in order to pursue specialist interests relevant to your chosen career. You undertake a major individual development project, researching a particular aspect of the programme and applying it to a specific situation. For this you have individual guidance from a personal supervisor who will help you to ensure that the project 'stays on track' and achieves its aims.
